About Us
The journey to founding Misty Meowtains was indeed like climbing a mountain. Lots of misleading direction, feelings of doubt, exhaustion and regret. But, when you finally see the peak through the misty foreground, you become invigorated, inspired and excited. I always knew we would get here, and here we finally are!
From a very young age, like, literally a three month old infant, I was surrounded by cats. My soul cat, Pokey, was with me until we both turned 21 (I had a scorpion bowl and she had a nice glass of mosCATo). I learned a lot from her, moreso when I began working with animals in a professional setting. What she was did not mean that was how every cat was going to be. To this day, that realisation is what fuels my desire to help the world understand cats just a bit more.
From working in a boarding facility for cats to spending almost 10 years in a shelter setting, I come from a long background of animal care and welfare. I dabbled in exotic and wildlife care and behavior and while I enjoyed it immensely, I still felt the overpowering tug toward my first love: cats. I worked with all kinds, too! From the ferals through TNR programs to the newcomers in the shelter, I helped them grow and find comfort in their new environment as much as possible. After many post-adoption check ins and adopter emails, it became clear to me that helping others help their animals was truly my happy place. I knew I wanted to work in animal behaviour for the rest of my life because quite honestly? I’m too restless for a desk job and the unknown excites me. :)
Founding statement:
For the longest time, cats have been known to be the “easier” of the two most common house pets - cats and dogs.
Due to this, anything a cat does that would be considered out of the ordinary of their expected behaviour would be considered “aggressive, dangerous and unfixable.” They are not acting “easy” like they’re supposed to be, something must be wrong with them!
Instead of understanding the importance of cats scratching and providing appropriate things for them to do it on, it is easier to declaw.
Instead of increasing their options for activities in the home and keeping them happy and content, it is easier to let them out to become outdoor cats.
Instead of understanding that cats cannot talk, scream or yell like us and that they use mouths and claws to communicate, it is easier to label them as aggressive and dangerous and rehome or euthanize.
When it comes down to it, the domestic house cat is misunderstood. Instead of addressing what could be upsetting the cat or causing certain behaviours, it is simply easier to remove them from the equation altogether. Thus, increasing the feline stray population and the ever-growing numbers of cats in shelters.
When we allow ourselves as humans, an animal as well, to understand that each living being on this planet has different needs and wants and the world cannot bend to our incessant need for perfection and immediate gratification, that is when we can begin to do better for not only the animals we promise to protect and love, but for ourselves.

Pocahontas AKA Pokey
To my soul cat, the one who started it all. I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for you. To the souls that couldn’t be saved: She will be waiting patiently for you at the Rainbow Bridge.
